High Asia began guiding exploratory treks, climbs and cultural tours in western Sichuan province in the early 1990s when the region was still restricted. Over the years we have offered some of the most unique cultural immersion trips ever done there. These shorter trips offer the highlights of our longer trips (Derge) , without the time commitment. Our journeys take us to Khampa homes nestled in the grasslands beneath towering Mt. Minya Konka, through Tibetan Buddhist monasteries such as Dzogchen, Palpung, Dzongser and Dechenling, to hotsprings and holy lakes. Options for camping are possible, but most tours stick to small guesthouses. This tour can be scheduled to coincide with the Lithang horse festival. Note: there is also the option to explore Chinese Buddhists sites such as Leshan-the largest Buddha in the world carved out of a cliff in during the Tang dynasty- and Mt. Omei Shan sacred to both Tibetans and Chinese as the abode of Samatabhadra. Contact us for more information on these tours.
