Eastern Tibet , known as Kham, is a magnificent landscape of immense
old growth forests, vast undulating grasslands, deep valleys, alpine
lakes and glaciated massifs reaching over 20,000 ft. The Khampa people
who inhabit this land are devout Buddhists. For centuries they have circumambulated
mountains believed to be sacred manifestations of various Buddhist divinities.
The Konkaling Peaks and Mt. Genyen in SW Kham are two such mountain complexes.
These peaks are some of the most beautiful in all of Tibet . Our goal
is to drive through Kham to the 19,000 ft. Konkaling peaks, circumambulate
the three sacred peaks over a 3-day period and then begin trekking north
towards Mt. Genyen . The intervening landscape is stunningly beautiful
and remains one of Tibet 's best-kept secrets. The Mt. Genyen area is
one of the most untouched regions of Kham. It is the highest peak in
the vicinity at just over 20,000 ft. Its fluted walls and hanging glaciers
appear suddenly out of the forests and grasslands that surround it. We
then trek around this sacred peak stopping at hot springs , sacred sites,
and small nomad camps. After emerging from the trek, we meet our landcruisers
and continue south to Gyalthang in Yunnan province. After a day touring
some of Gyalthang's beautiful monasteries we fly out to Kunming . It
is also possible to schedule this trip to coincide with the famous Lithang
Horse Festival which is held every year on August 1 st . For more information
