![]() Three Rivers of East Tibet : The Salween, The Mekong, and The Yangtze Location: NW Yunnan As the Yangtze, Salween and Mekong rivers descend south from their headwaters
in Qinghai and northern Tibet they reach a point at the border intersection
of Tibet, Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, where they flow parallel to each
other through a stretch of land not more than 50 km wide. Close proximity
of such mighty rivers has created a geography like nowhere else on the
planet. Separating the rivers are the Salween/Mekong, and Mekong/Yangtze
watersheds. These watersheds form the southern extreme of the Hengduan
mountains, which reach a high point in the area on the 6,740 meter summit
of sacred Mt. Kang Karpo. High Asia has designed a unique rafting expedition
which give rafters the opportunity to raft all three rivers in one expedition.
We have chosen sections of each river in the vicinity of the Tibetan town
of Deqen in extreme NW Yunnan. Along the sections we have chosen, are
small dirt roads which access our put in/take out locations. At the end
of each section our landcruisers will be waiting to take us and our rafts
to our put in spots on our next river of choice. We begin on the Salween,
then move to the Mekong, and end up on the Yangtze. Depending on interest,
particular sections on any river can be extended or eliminated.
