Namonani is the highest peak in the Gurla range, located in western
Tibet 100 km south of sacred Mt. Kailash. It was climbed in 1987 by a
joint Sino-Japanese team. The landscape around this peak includes nomad
inhabited high plains, huge turquoise lakes, and the neighboring Kailash
range to the north. The landscape makes the journey to this peak almost
as enjoyable as the climb itself. Namonani offers an extremely wide variety
of terrain ranging from difficult mixed routes up the vertical north
face, to gradual walk ups along the NE ridge. There are two ways of reaching
Namonani. A four day drive from Lhasa takes one across Tibet along the
foothills of the Himalaya. A four to five day journey from Kashgar along
the extremely remote Tibet-Xinjiang highway affords spectacular views
of high deserts and mountains in the Aksai Chin region of north west
China.
