To Hindus and Buddhists, Mt. Kailash is the spiritual center
of the universe. For centuries it has attracted pilgrims to its remote
location in western Tibet. Around the mountain is a path followed by
people as they circumambulate the peak in search of spiritual merit.
Many Tibetans travel the route by full body prostration. Hindu yogins
practice austerity in caves that dot the mountain, clad at times, only
in loin cloths. The trek around this peak takes one through stunning
mountain scenery as well as through a fascinating confluence of cultures
engaged in spiritual pursuit. The treks around Kailash also include a
trip to the beaches of nearby lake Manasarovar. This lake is considered
by Hindu and Buddhists to be as holy as Kailash. Those wishing to extend
their visit to these two sites can do so by opting for the side trip
to the ancient monasteries of Tsaparang(also known as Guge) and Tholing.
Both monasteries have frescos which are the only surviving examples of
beautiful Kashmiri style Buddhist art left in Tibet. Please contact
