In 1980 while flying from Chengdu to Lhasa the late explorer/photographer Galen Rowell sat stunned in his seat as he gazed down on the peaks and valleys of the Nyenchentangla range in eastern Tibet. 'Here, he wrote, 'was an oceanic expanse of unclimbed, unexplored peak that would keep mountaineers and trekkers busy for generations'. Nearly t wo decades later British climber Sir Chris Bonnington became one of the first westerners to enter and attempt some of the grandest peaks of this range. In the processes he discovered an ancient pilgrimage route around the highest massif known as the Sepu Kangri group. Our goal is to hike and extend the route, stopping at Buddhist hermitages on the way, cross a watershed and descend to the headwaters of the Po Yigrong river which we follow back to the road. This is some of Tibet's most beautiful landscape. Old growth forests, unclimbed peaks, small villages and hillsides of rare alpine wildflowers await trekkers. CLIMBERS TAKE NOTE!! High Asia also offers climbing expeditions in this range. Contact us for more information on this trek and climbing possibilities.
