Undiscovered Bhutan: A New Trek Through Innermost Bhutan to the World's Highest Unclimbed peak

Duration: 18 or 22 days
April-May / October- November
Difficulty Level: Moderate/Strenuous
Costs: From $4,100

During 2002 High Asia was hired by the Royal Government of Bhutan to help design new treks in central and eastern Bhutan. This is one of our unique, totally new itineraries that arose from that work. The trek starts in Bumthang (central Bhutan) and follows ancient trade routes north to the forbidden Monla Karchung group of peaks. The actual trade route, which is now no longer used, led to the Lodrak region of Tibet-a stronghold of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Today only nomads go back and forth from Bhutan to Tibet over these forbidden passes. Our route veers west before reaching these passes, and continues to the little known east face of 7,500 meter Mt. Gangkar Punsum-the world's highest unclimbed summit. After crossing a beautiful pass the route joins the traditional ending of the Snowman trek which bring us back to the village of Jakar in Bumthang. This trek allows participants to experience Bhutan's finest mountain scenery as well as the rich, earthy Buddhist culture of Bumthang before returning to western Bhutan where the journey ends.
