About Us

Where we have been….Where we are going….

Over fourteen years have passed since we first began guiding in high Asia. During these years we have pioneered new treks, climbs and cultural tours throughout the Himalaya and adjacent ranges. We have remained true to our mission: to explore and help conserve the cultures and environment of Asia’s innermost wilderness. The high ranges of Asia and cultures therein are the sole focus of our expertise and thus we have confined our guided trips to the mountains, plateaus and rivers of Tibet/China, India, Sikkim, Bhutan and Myanmar.

In last decade immense changes have occurred throughout remote Asia. Many of these changes have been beneficial to both people and the environment and many have not. Most strikingly, the pace of change in these last remote areas of Asia has exponentially increased. Tour operators such as ours that continually venture into these regions must shoulder some of the responsibility and make sure we are agents of productive change.

We believe that low-impact tourism can help to preserve the cultures and biodiversity of remote, high Asia. As you read through these trip descriptions you may note the sense of urgency we feel about the natural situation in western China, Tibet, Bhutan and the Himalayan regions of India and Myanmar. Though much has been done in these areas to protect their unique ecosystems, there is a great need for more.

Many of our expeditions take place in areas at risk of losing plant and animal diversity. Low-impact tourism can play an essential role in helping to increase awareness in the outside world as well as in the local people, of the need to preserve these areas for future generations, rather than exploit them now for short term economic gain.

High Asia focuses on Tibet, India, Bhutan, Sikkim and Myanmar. Within these countries we have selected regions either recently opened to limited tourism, or regions requiring special permits. These areas we guide in are unquestionably the most remote and beautiful of the Himalaya. Because of this great care is taken to move through the landscape leaving no trace. Our professional guides are experts in the cultures that thrive amongst the high ranges of inner Asia. Such knowledge is essential in order to give participants the most from their experience. Because many of High Asia’s trips are in areas where tourism is new, most trips are led by one of our professional guides. Local guides accompany all of our guides. No matter how much expertise a foreigner can have on an area or people, there is no substitute for local knowledge.

We invite you to email or call us with questions about High Asia’s travel opportunities.
